Mastering IGETC vs. Major Preparation
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) satisfies all lower-division general education requirements for most UC campuses. However, for STEM majors (Computer Science, Engineering, Biology), major preparation coursework takes priority over full IGETC completion.
Utilizing ASSIST.org Correctly
ASSIST.org is the official repository for articulation agreements between California Community Colleges and UCs. Cross-reference every course you take at SMC against your target UC major to ensure full credit transferability.
Leveraging the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)
TAG guarantees admission to six UC campuses (including UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara) if you maintain a specific GPA threshold (typically 3.4+) and complete required major prep by established deadlines. Note: UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UCSD do not participate in TAG.
Building a Competitive Academic Profile
Beyond keeping a strong GPA (3.7+ for competitive majors at UCLA/UCB), admissions committees look for leadership, campus involvement, and clear thematic alignment in your UC Personal Insight Questions (PIQs).
