On-Campus Employment Rules
F-1 students are eligible to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during active academic semesters and up to 40 hours during official winter/summer breaks. No special USCIS authorization is required, but you must obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) through SMC's IEC office.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) for Internships
CPT authorizes off-campus internships directly related to your major field of study. To qualify, you must have completed at least one full academic year in F-1 status and be enrolled in an internship/co-op course.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) Post-Graduation
OPT grants up to 12 months of employment authorization in your field of study after completing your degree (e.g., after earning an Associate or Bachelor's degree). Applications must be filed with USCIS up to 90 days prior to graduation.
STEM OPT Extension
Graduates with qualifying Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) degrees are eligible for an additional 24-month OPT extension, providing a total of 36 months of work authorization in the US.
