Most US institutions accept all three major exams. TOEFL iBT is computer-based with academic emphasis; IELTS offers a human-conducted speaking section; Duolingo (DET) is an affordable, AI-proctored home exam accepted by SMC and many universities.
SMC Admission Score Thresholds
For direct admission into academic classes at SMC, typical minimum target scores are: TOEFL iBT: 45+, IELTS Academic: 5.0+, or Duolingo English Test: 75+. Scoring below these thresholds may require initial placement in Intensive English Program (IEP) courses.
Waivers for UC Transfer Students
Once you transfer from SMC to a UC or 4-year university, completing UC-transferable English composition courses (such as English 1 and English 2 at SMC) with a grade of 'C' or higher waives the requirement for standardized English proficiency testing.
